The BJP is poised to breach the West Bengal stronghold of Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, with five of the seven exit polls released on Wednesday predicting that the saffron party could cross the halfway mark. According to Matrize, the BJP is projected to win between 146 and 161 seats in the 294-member Assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 147 seats.

The survey gave the TMC 125-140 seats, while Others were projected to secure 6-10 seats. There were no takers for the Congress party in Bengal as the Matrize survey predicted ZERO seats for the Grand Old Party.

P-MARQ exit poll also predicted somewhat similar results, giving the BJP 150-175 seats and the TMC 118-138 seats. Congress and Others were not expected to secure any significant presence.

Chanakya Strategies’ post-poll survey also gave an edge to the BJP, predicting 150-160 seats for the saffron party and 130-140 for the TMC. Others were projected to get 6-10 seats, while Congress and the Left were expected to draw a blank.

However, People’s Pulse predicted a completely different outcome. As per their survey, the TMC is likely to retain power with 178-189 seats, with the BJP registering a strong performance but still falling short with 95-110 seats. This was the only survey that predicted 1-3 seats for the Congress party. The Left was likely to draw a blank with 0-1 seats.

Another survey by Janmat also predicted a TMC landslide, giving the ruling party 195-205 seats. The BJP, as per Janmat survey, is poised to win not more than 80-90 seats.

However, two more surveys gave the BJP a clear edge. Poll Diary predicted 142-171 seats for the saffron party and 99-127 for the TMC. Praja Poll Exit Poll predicted a massive saffron surge in Bengal, giving the BJP 178-208 seats. The TMC was projected to win 85-110 seats.

The exit polls have a mixed history – sometimes they have predicted the outcome quite accurately, while on several occasions they have proved completely wrong. In 2021, most exit polls predicted a BJP victory in Bengal, but the outcome was completely different – a resounding victory for Mamata Banerjee-led TMC.

The Election Commission of India will announce the official results on May 4.
